Qualification for dissertation examination

Master’s (bachelor-master) degree course
  1. A person who passed the foreign language test and the general exam
  2. A person who received approval for research plan and dissertation guidance from a professor for at least two semesters
  3. A person who has completed registration for the 4th semester (third semester of the academic year) and has a grade of 3.0(B) or higher for 24 or more credits
  4. (Any person who fails to earn a grade less than 3.0(B) will not be admitted even after passing the evaluation.)
  5. A person who has completed a set of athlete's credits separately for the subject
  6. For master's course or bachelor-master integrated course, a person who has history of publishing a thesis in academic journal or of staging art performance or exhibition
  7. A person who completed a master’s course or bachelor-master integrated course and filed for research registration
  8. A person who has completed the research ethics education and submitted the research ethics agreement
Doctor’s (master-doctor) degree course
  1. A person who passed the foreign language test and the general exam
  2. A person who received approval for research plan and dissertation guidance from a professor for more than two semesters (for master-doctor integrated course, more than three semesters)
  3. A person who completed the interim release of dissertation (normally one semester before applying for the examination)
  4. A person who completed the presentation of a side dissertation
  5. A person who had registration for 4 semesters in doctor’s degree course (8 semesters in master-doctor integrated course) with an average grade of 3.0(B) or higher for 36 credits
    (Any person who fails to earn a grade less than 3.0(B) will not be admitted even after passing the evaluation.)
    ※ Doctoral candidate in his 4th semester must be registered for more than 4 semesters.
  6. A person who has completed a set of athlete's credits separately for the subject
  7. A person who completed a doctor’s course or master-doctor integrated course and filed for research registration
  8. A person who has completed the research ethics education and submitted the research ethics agreement

Required documents and fees

Master’s (bachelor-master) degree course
  1. Required documents – One copy of the examination application (submit to Graduate School administration office), three copies of dissertation to be examined (submit to the department concerned)
  2. Dissertation examination fee - 90,000 KRW, designated account payment (all submissions)
  3. Dissertation guidance fee - 50,000 KRW, designated account payment (for ABD - all-but-dissertation - students)
  4. Research registration fee - 10% of the tuition, designated account payment (starting with ABD students after 2017 class)
Doctor’s (master-doctor) degree course
  1. Required documents – One copy of the examination application (submit to Graduate School administration office), five copies of dissertation to be examined (submit to the department concerned)
  2. Dissertation examination fee - 500,000 KRW, designated account payment (all submissions)
  3. Dissertation guidance fee - 70,000 KRW, designated account payment (for ABD students)
  4. Research registration fee - 15% of the tuition, designated account payment (starting with ABD students after 2013 class)

Usually at the end of April and October (see notice)

Enrolled students

Graduate School homepage → Academic information → Check the dissertation title at the ‘Dissertation Title Registration/Change’ section / Make change if the titles do not match → Apply for dissertation examination → Print out a copy of the examination application → Designated account payment → Submit the examination application to the Graduate School administration office (submit the dissertation to the department concerned)

ABD students

The same applies to ABD students, but they’re required to additionally pay fees for dissertation guidance and research registration.

Examination schedule

  1. Preliminary examination : 1st semester, early May ~ middle of May, 2nd semester, early November ~ middle of November
  2. Main examination : 1st semester, middle of May ~ early June, 2nd semester, middle of November ~ early December
  3. Examination result : 1st semester – early July, 2nd semester, early January
