Moderate options that once offered stability and comfort are disappearing and citizens are forced to choose between extremes. This unsettling trend reflects a society in which living a normal and balanced life is becoming increasingly impossible. The Rise of Polarized Consumption In 2025, Korean college students are experiencing the phenomenon of consumer polarization firsthand. While many students facing economic hardship, prioritize value for money and accessibility by cutting back on essentials like food, dining out, and clothing while also relying on low-priced items and second-hand transactions, some upper-class college students are actively spending on luxury brands, premium sneakers, and limited-edition items, by engaging in "flex consumption." The recent hot topic “Young Forty”, which means “trend-sensitive, self-management consumer in their 40s” more than a decade ago, has now become a word of ridicule, and from last year to now, it has become a popular "contemptuous word" even mentioned in newspapers and broadcasts. Now, the word is understood as “middle-aged pretending to be young” in mismatched trendy clothes, and sarcastically refers to a person in their 40s who is trying to curry favor with young women as “Sweet Young Forty”. Then when, how, and why did the word, which meant a young middle-aged person in a positive sense, become derision and negative? Let’s take a look at the process through which the word “Young Forty” underwent such a significant change. What “Young Forty” is South Korea’s “Young-Forty,” known locally as “Young Forty”, has rapidly become one of the country’s most debated cultural labels. The term originally emerged as a positive description of forty-somethings who maintained youthful tastes, active lifestyles, and digital fluency. However, even if it is not hacking, the terms of use that we casually agree on in our daily lives can lead to serious privacy breaches. ‘If you agree with the above regulations, please apply!’ Have you ever seen that message? Agreeing to regulations is necessary to use an application or website. Also, it’s too complicated and long. That’s why we just pass over this message. However, we don’t know about the risk of agreeing. Nevertheless, what exactly are we agreeing to and what are the risks? What Are We Agreeing to When signing up for a new app or website, users are almost always required to accept the terms of service. These documents often dismissed without a second glance contain legally binding agreements that outline how your data will be used, stored, and sometimes shared. While the length and complexity of these terms make them difficult to understand, the implications of blindly accepting them can be serious. Many terms of service include clauses that allow companies to collect not only basic information like your name and email address, but also more sensitive data such as your location, browsing habits, and even biometric identifiers.
