Communication Design Major
The Visual Design Major aims to educate visual designers who have strong artistic skills and creative formality while pursuing a rich human environment through design. To this end, the curriculum of visual design is divided into typography, advertising design, packaging design, illustration, and computer graphics. Each specialty area has systematic linkage to acquire comprehensive insight. The Interior Design Major is the first major to be established in a Korean four-year university to recognize the importance of the physical, psychological, and emotional impacts of the indoor environment on human beings and anticipate design specialization in the future society. Therefore, this major has become a birthplace of many interior design education courses while developing a history and tradition that has played a pivotal role in establishing academic research institutes for interior design. In this major, full-time professors and instructors are continuously developing an educational system to train creative interior design leaders and are carrying out experimental education while remaining faithful to basic principles.
Through these courses, students have won many awards in major competitions and have proven the excellence of interior design education at Sangmyung University through exhibitions at overseas universities and various exchange programs. Based on these educational achievements, the major received the Education Award from the Korean Society of Interior Design.
In addition, graduates are now working as active professors, CEOs, designers, public service officials, and middle school teachers throughout the world, contributing to the development of society. To contribute to humanity and the social environment in the 21st century represented by internationalization, openness, and informatization, this major has generated creative and professional interior design leaders with a global sense.
Ceramic Design Major
Ceramics originated from ancient earthenware to conjecture the history of human culture and generally refers to the industry using ceramics, glass, bricks and other kilns. Today, it is distinguished from the porcelain-centered classic ceramics, and is referred to as New Ceramic Fine Ceramic which means high-tech new material development and special precision ceramics of an advanced project today. That it is defined as the “Second Latest Stone Age” means that its domain is expanding and is playing a leading role in the future industry as a whole.
What is inevitably raised these days is the question of ceramics product design and the change of its consciousness by necessity.
The new awareness of modern design means that not only the "proposal of color, form, or decoration" but also the "concept of material, technology, production, distribution" should be included. Who will be responsible for ceramic design in the future? How should they be fostered? Such questions pose problems to overcome. Professionals who will be responsible for ceramic design will be the designers with scientific thinking and a firm design philosophy produced by an efficient curriculum.
Ceramic design education so far has been included in ceramics crafts without any clear independence, and formative ceramic expression education has been considered as an approach to ceramics design education. The Ceramic Design Major in Sangmyung University was established in March 1988 as the only university program in Korea, producing specialists to participate in or research the development of design craftworks in industrial ceramics.
We look forward to seeing their vibrant roles in design research in the new ceramic design field by attempting new programs such as the accumulation of technology and experiences through industry-academic cooperation research and the cultivation of mass production adaptability.
