College of Global Regions

The College of Global Regions was established in 2017 to respond actively to the accelerating globalization in the 21st century. It currently offers 6 Language and Regional Studies Majors (Japanese Language and Regional Studies Major, Chinese Language and Regional Studies Major, English Language and Regional Studies Major, French Language and Regional Studies Major, German Language and Regional Studies Major, and Russian Language and Regional Studies Major) as well as 2 cross-listed majors (Global Language and Regional Studies Major and Global Cultural Contents Major). The College of Global Regions runs an open major system to keep pace with the global trend of pursuing interdisciplinary convergence. In the College of Global Regions, students develop the skills to become regional experts by completing core courses and taking major classes to have a foundational understanding in different regions of the world and improve their refinement in the humanities.

Japanese Language and Regional Studies Major

The educational objectives of the Japanese Language and Regional Studies Major are the acquisition of practical Japanese language and advanced professional knowledge in Japanese language, literature, and culture and the cultivation of the proper character and refinement as an intellectual to respond actively to the present era of informatization, globalization, and competition.

The major focuses on nurturing human resources who can contribute to the development of society and cultural exchange between Korea and Japan.

Chinese Language and Regional Studies Major

The Chinese Language and Regional Studies Major aims to educate China experts who can contribute to the development of Korea and human society. With a population of 13 billion, China has close political, economic, and cultural relationships with Korea, so it is nationally vital to cultivate China experts for increasing exchanges between the two countries.

Under this basic awareness, the Chinese Language and Regional Studies Major aims to cultivate human resources who have the ability to perform their duties in China-related fields by speaking fluent Chinese and understanding the Chinese culture well.

English Language and Regional Studies Major

English is the most widely used language in international politics, economics, diplomacy and the private sector as the lingua franca of the world. At the same time, English-speaking regions that have English as the native or official language not only include powerful nations such as the U.K., U.S., Canada, and Australia but also India, Singapore, the Republic of South Africa, and Kenya. The English Language and Regional Studies Major aims to deepen students’ understanding concerning the society and culture of English-speaking regions and cultivate global professionals who can lead the era of globalization with creativity and sensibilities of the humanities. This is achieved through a practical and academic approach toward English language, literature, and the cultures of English-speaking regions, thereby cultivating English experts who can speak English fluently. To do so, students will take balanced and practical courses in English literature, English language, English translation and interpretation, English education, geography of English-speaking regions, society, politics, economics, and history as well as using and practicing English to improve their English-speaking skills. The major aims to nurture professionals and experts through education and the career development program (CDR) for their career goals.

French Language and Regional Studies Major

The French Language and Regional Studies Major aims to nurture specialists by cultivating wide-ranging and in-depth knowledge of French language and literature and French culture, humanities character, and creativity to meet the era of knowledge informatization and globalization. To do so, the major includes courses to develop students’ fluency and understanding of French, examine humanity, the world, and the meaning of life through the study of literature and by clarifying the logical structure of the thought process through studies in language phenomena and courses to build an international sense and cultural insights through knowledge of the French culture.

German Language and Regional Studies Major

The 'global society', which was presented as a vision in the 20th century, has become the reality of the 21st century. And communication, the most important ability in the global era, is based on language and cultural understanding. The German Language and Regional Studies Major aims to raise the understanding of German society with its rich cultural and cultural traditions and, as a result, to raise talented individuals who will contribute to the Korean society. In order to cultivate Germany experts who will play a pivotal role in the European Union, the German Language and Regional Studies Major offers a variety of curricula that deepen cultural understanding for students to acquire the German language.

Russian Language and Regional Studies Major

Sangmyung University's Russian Language and Regional Studies Major is becoming a cradle to nurture professional and creative Russian culture professionals who will play a pivotal role in the new Eurasian cooperation era. The Eurasian Initiative, which has emerged as one of the most important concepts of foreign policy in our country, indicates that Korea 's foreign policy has been shifting away from Western Europe and the United States, while expanding to Northeast Asia and Eurasia. Eurasian countries with abundant natural resources and vast markets have now become new partners and close economic partners with Korea in the 21st century, and there is no need to say more about the political and economic significance of the partnership. In this process of change, Central Asian countries, such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, as well as Russia, have emerged as important geopolitical partners with Korea. In line with this, the Sangmyung University Russian Language and Regional Studies major was re-launched from the former 'Russian Language and Literature' system, and changed its system in 2017 into the 'Russian Language and Regional Studies major'. Its educational goal is to nurture professional and creative talents that will play a pivotal role in our partnership with Central Asian countries. The primary goal of the curriculum focuses on cultivating Russian language that is used as an official language in Russia and Central Asia. Based on this, it will educate students to acquire diverse regional knowledge concerning social, cultural, historical, political, economic and diplomatic aspects of Russia and Central Asian countries and cultivate a wide range of regional literacy that is indispensable in future interactions with this region. To become a cradle of professional and creative Russian culture professionals, all members and faculty of the Russian Language and Regional Studies Major are working hard to develop students’ expertise and skills. After the 20th anniversary of the Department establishment in 2016, we hope our students will fulfill their dreams in the "Russian Regional Studies Major", which is now recast as a major encompassing Russia and Central Asia. Our faculty members will do their best to help you achieve your dream.
