평행선 공리의 의미와 중요성을 여러 각도에서 분석하고 이를 가정하여 증명되는 Euclid 기하학의 정리들과 이를 부정했을 때의 비Euclid 기하학을 비교함으로써 논리적 사고력을 배양함은 물론 수학에의 이해와 시야를 넓힐 수 있음을 목적으로 한다. 아울러 평행선 공리와는 또다른 공리를 가정한 사영기하학과 곡선, 곡면 등의 수학적 대상을 미분적인 측면에서 고찰한 미분기하학을 다룬다.

Differential geometry is a mathematical discipline which uses the techniques of differential calculus, integral calculus and linear algebra to study problems in geometry. This course develops the theory of plane and space curves and surfaces in the Euclidean space.
