현대문명은 도시문명이라 불릴 만큼 도시는 우리 생활에 중요하다. 본 강좌는 도시에 대해 지리학적으로 접근하여 보다 깊은 이해하려는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 한국의 도시를 급속하게 변화하고 있는 하나의 체제로 규정하고 관련 학술논문을 읽고 토론하고자 한다. 구체적인 주제로 도시문화와 그 상품화, 각종 개발을 둘러싼 지역 간의 갈등, 도시경제와 혁신, 세계화에 따른 도시의 재편, 도시 내 권력관계 및 지배구조, 도시 내 사회계층별 차이, 도시 간 격차 등을 다룬다. 끝으로 도시에 대한 권리는 무엇이며 누구에게 주워져야 하는지 논의한다.
교과목해설(영문)
More than fifty percent of the world population and almost ninety percent of Koreans live in cities. To have a better understanding of the cities, this course puts the urban settings in a geographic framework. The course begins with an brief introduction of basic concepts in the study of urban geography. Main topics include the interaction and impacts of historical, physical, and social forces on the cities at both the external (between cities) and internal (within cities) scales. This course will bring an understanding of how cities emerge, form, and work and what problems and opportunities they have.
