인간의 문화적 행위로써의 무용을 앞으로 어떻게 더 발전시킬 수 있는가? 이 질문에 대한 답을 찾기 위해서는 역사와 문화적 배경에서 무용의 발달과 변화과정을 이해하는 것이 중요하다. 「무용인류학과 역사」는 문화유형과 경험으로서 무용에 대한 본질적 이해와 무용의 역사적, 문화적 변화과정을 이해하는 교과목이다. 문화와 무용에 대한 지식, 문화적 배경에서 무용의 세계적인 의미, 문화의 진화에 있어서 무용의 역할 등 무용인류학(Dance Anthropology), 민족무용학(Dance Ethnology), 민족안무학(Ethnochoreology)의 다양한 관점들을 포괄하는 맥락에서 문화행위로써의 무용을 통찰하는 안목을 키운다. 무용인류학과 역사를 공부하는 것은 무용전공자들 스스로 ‘자기인식’을 목적으로 한다. 인류의 진화과정에서 ‘무용은 그동안 어떤 역할을 해왔는가’, 결국 ‘무용이란 무엇인가’하는 본질을 아는 일이다. 또한 과거 무용의 행보가 길잡이가 되어 ‘우리가 무엇을 할 수 있겠는가’ 하는 미래의 가능성을 고민하고 조망하기 위해 이 교과목은 기초이론으로써 매우 중요하다.

How can we further develop the dance as a human cultural act in the future? To find the answer to this question, it is important to understand the development and changing process of dance in historical and cultural settings. "History of Dance Anthropology" is a subject that understands the essential understanding of dance and the historical and cultural changing process of dance as a cultural type and experience. It raises an insight into dance as a cultural activity in the context of encompassing various perspectives of dance anthropology, dance ethnology, and national choreography, such as knowledge of culture and dance, global meaning of dance in cultural background, and the role of dance in cultural evolution. Studying dance anthropology and history aims to "self-recognize" dance majors themselves. In the course of human evolution, we know the essence of "what has dance been doing?" and "what is it?" Also, the subject is very important as a basic theory in order to guide dance moves in the past and contemplate and view future possibilities of 'what can we do?'
